Networking on Fedora 17

Hi Folks,
I just cannot get Fedora 17 to talk to other machines on the same network.
It doesn't help that I really REALLY don't like Gnome 3 and am having to
fight that at the same time.
Sequence of events:
I installed Fedora 17 from a Magazine front cover live DVD, then did a YUM
UPDATE to get everything up to date.
Then did an add/remove software to add in a load of other apps I wanted.
These included NFS, SAMBA and Apache. As far as I can tell, I've
downloaded all the bits I need. I've configured it as best I can, but then
it won't respond to requests from other machines.
I googled, and amongst other things identified (by using rpcinfo -p) that
mountd, nfs, and rquotad are not running. Portmapper and status are though.
I've installed nfs-utils-1:1.2.6-3.fc17 but I cannot seem to install the
separate package nfs-utils-lib-1.1.5-6.fc17 Is this needed as well? If so
how do I install it? Is there anything obvious I must have missed?
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Many thanks,
Dave
