A couple of further thoughts.

Without further knowledge of the OP's environment, it's not up to us to say
whether or not he operates within a secure environment. Let the OP tell us, and
we can tailor our responses accordingly. I can think of a couple of situations
in which telnet is acceptable, and one where telnet is a requirement. Can you?

Additionally, telling the OP (or anyone else for that matter) to "always use
ssh, never use telnet" is as unreasoned as always telling users "reboot your
system to fix any problem". It /may/ be the correct answer, but it also may not
be. People here rail against the unreasoned responses of support areas who say
things like "reboot to fix the problem", or "reinstall your software to fix the
problem" /because/ (among other reasons) they are rote responses that show that
the support person is not even thinking about the problem. It's a scripted
response, an unreasoned response. OTOH, some of us pride ourselves on being
thinking beings, and interact in fora like these as an expression of that
thought. If you want to tell people an unreasoned response, there are plenty of
call centres that would happily employ you to do so. Here, we operate at a
higher standard, and actually try to /answer/ questions and /help/ people.
