Software brightness.

I have a laptop, that is too bright to comfortably view in subdued
light when set at minimum brightness.
Is it possible in some way to setup a 24 bit display, so that white would
equal say #505050?

Setting colours works well for terms, but generally not for graphical
apps such as browsers.
