I had been running Red Hat 7 with XFree86 v3.3 on my Toshiba Tecra
700ct laptop (P120/32MB RAM/2GB HD/C&T 65548 video @ 800x600 native),
and everything ran without any problems using the SVGA X server. I
recently decided to upgrade this system to Slackware 9 with XFree86
v4.3.0. Everything proceeded well, and the installation completed
without any problems. After rebooting in text mode, I ran xf86config
and selected a horizontal sync of 31.5-37.9 and a vertical refresh of
50-70, the settings which had worked with Red Hat 7. I chose my video
hardware, a built-in Chips and Technologies 65548 supported by the
"chips" server, and wrote the config to disk. When I tried to start
X, the screen got all wavy, and the screen moved vertically, like an
old TV with the vertical hold set wrong. I killed the X server and
took a look at X's startup log, which looked normal. The panel size
was detected correctly. I ran xf86config again, this time choosing
the VESA driver. Everything synced correctly at 800x600x16, but it
was really slow, and when I quit out of twm and exited the initial
xterm, the system froze hard. How can I get the chips driver to work
with my hardware?
