X11 over ssh. $DISPLAY setting

I'm running an X server at home (X-win32 on WinXP, and the usual with
RH9) to run programs remotely (at uni) using forwarded X11 over ssh, and
it's working pretty well. I can run xterm, mozilla and even fvwm.

A problem I have run into is that when I try to run certain programs
(most notably gui apps with the jvm) I get an error saying that the
display localhost:<usually 16.0> can't be found. I get the same problem
in either WinXP or RH9.

As I understand it the X11 packets(?) are being sent to localhost:16.0
before being detected(?) by X-win32 and displayed on localhost:0.0 or
something.

Anyone who can explain what is going on or can refer me somewhere, or
can even solve the problem for me would be muchlt appreciated.

Ben O.
