Yes you can change your screen resolution on the fly in X and in KDE.
All you have to do is Type and Hold the Ctrl+Alt+<Plus Key in the
keypad>

This shortcut works for all of the window mangager programs that I
have worked in... KDE, Gnome, Blackbox, Icewm, Enlightenment, and
FVWM.
