I want to set up X on my machine at work (just got a new one). It has
some on-board video as part of the i845G chipset (don't flame me about
it having pants graphics, I didn't choose this corporate style POS.)
I am running debian testing. I notice that support for i845G has been
added in xfree86 4.3.0. Unfortunately, debian doesn't have 4.3.0 in
either sid/unstable or testing. What to do?
In no particular order -
*) I hear about something in debian/experimental? Will this screw my
system by preventing a return to testing or even sid? How do I apply
such a thing?
*) Do I try to build it off of debian sources. X strike force offers
source pacakges, I think this could lessen the library dependency
problems.
*) Should I just download and install stuff from xfree86.org directly?
Should I do binaries?
*) Should I get source from xfree86.org? Can I install it in a
non-standard location? I really want to continue using
debian/testing and be able to switch to the debian xf43 package when
it comes out.
*) Buy a cheap (< $30 since I am just losing money on this) video
card. Any recommendations? btw, no, I have no need of 3D
performance whatsoever.
*) Switch to another distribution, e.g., gentoo? Probably all except
maybe slack offer xfree86 4.3 by now.
*) Anyone have any other advice?
Thanks.
