booting X on Dell Optiplex GX620 with Dell E171FP monitor

    With hardware as described in the subject I cannot bring up X in
    any resolution other than 640x480 @60MHz. One oddity is that
    while the X console is that way, the 6 tty consoles put the monitor
    in 1024x768 @60, while the monitor advertises preference for
    1280x1024. For video the box has integrated DVMT video that
    a vendor utility labels "i845".

    Linux kernel 2.4.20-4GB, vendor (SuSE) built Wed Aug 6 18:26:21
