Hey ho.

I recently installed Slackware 9.0 on a NEC Versa P520 laptop, but I'm
not pleased with the appearance of X. Fonts look very fuzzy in
spots. I don't think that it's really a font issue, since if I "grab"
a snapshot of an xterm via xv, I see the same fuzziness.

Note: The fuzziness seems to depend on the location of the screen.
When I move my xv image of the xterm around the screen, the fuzzy
spots do not stay in one place in the image. So, the fuzziness is
*not* due to faithful reproduction of a fuzzy xterm!

This laptop has (according to
<http://help.nec-computers.com/uk/pib.asp?platform=platform_L4B>) an
Intel Extreme Graphics Driver. I've seen the XF86Config of another
user, and copied it for my use. It includes the following:

,----[ From XF86Config ]
| Section "Monitor"
| Identifier "Monitor0"
| VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
| ModelName "Generic Laptop Display Panel 1280x1024"
| HorizSync 31.5 - 67.0
| VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
| Option "dpms"
| EndSection
|
| Section "Device"
| Identifier "Videocard0"
| Driver "i810"
| VendorName "Videocard vendor"
| BoardName "Intel 852"
| VideoRam 65536
| EndSection
|
| Section "Screen"
| Identifier "Screen0"
| Device "Videocard0"
| Monitor "Monitor0"
| DefaultDepth 16
| SubSection "Display"
| Depth 16
| Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
| EndSubSection
| EndSection
|
| Section "DRI"
| Group 0
| Mode 0666
| EndSection
`----

Note that some of those modes are unused:

,----[ From XFree86.0.log ]
| (II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-67.00 kHz
| (II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-75.00 Hz
| (II) I810(0): Not using mode "1280x960" (no mode of this name)
| (II) I810(0): Not using mode "1152x864" (no mode of this name)
| (II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode (1280 -> 2048).
| (--) I810(0): Virtual size is 1280x1024 (pitch 2048)
| (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1280x1024"
| (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1024x768"
| (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "800x600"
| (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"
`----

The agpgart and i830 modules are loaded when X starts. I tried
installing newer versions of these modules as found on Intel's site,
but when I did, X failed with Signal 11, so I uninstalled them.

Any help would be appreciated.
