Perhaps a newbie question about compiling X packages and using apt-rpm

    I compiled a more recent Freetype, among other things, to get better
    looking fonts on my RedHat 9.

    Now I am trying to compile a simple program kbiff. It complains about "X
    includes" missing. So I think that maybe I never installed X development
    tools. And I think maybe kbiff compilation needs KDE dev tools too. So I
    decide to let apt-rpm to take care of that:

    >[app@anssin kbiff-3.7]$ sudo apt-get install kdebase-devel
    ...
    >The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    > kdebase-devel: Depends: kdelibs-devel (>= 6:3.1.3) but it is not going
    > to be installed
    >E: Broken packages

    Actually I don't undertand this message very well. Why doesn't apt-get
    tell me the reason, why kdelibs-devel is not going to be installed? Ok, I
    find out:

    >[app@anssin kbiff-3.7]$ sudo apt-get install kdelibs-devel
    > kdelibs-devel: Depends: arts-devel (>= 8:1.1.3) but it is not going to
    > be installed
    > Depends: qt-devel (>= 1:3.1.2-7) but it is not going to be installed

    ...etc., until I fonally get to:

    >The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    > freetype-devel: Depends: freetype (= 2.1.3-6) but 2.1.4-4.1 is to be
    > installed
    >E: Broken packages

    Is this trying to tell, that I have a too new version of Freetype? Why
    doesn't it say so? What does it mean "2.1.4 is to be intalled"? I already
    have it, see:

    [app@anssin kbiff-3.7]$ rpm -qv freetype freetype-2.1.4-4.1

    So, is the solution, that I manually install a more recent version of ALL
    the packages that "kbiff" needs? Is there any easier way?
