    Hi all

I have recently purchased an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro graphics card and am
trying to get it working properly under linux. I have downloaded ATI's
binary driver from their web site (fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.5.i586.rpm),
converted it to the package type that I normally use (slackware .tgz),
installed it, and compiled the kernel modules according to the
accompanying documentation. Everything seems to work until I test
direct rendering for 3D applications. The fglrxinfo utility and
/var/log/XFree86.0.log indicate that everything is okay. When I start a
3D application it initially begins to run properly with the expected
hardware acceleration. Then everything freezes, forcing me to perform
a hard reboot. (The included program fgl_glxgears runs for a few minutes
before the lockup. The standard glxgears runs for a second or two at
approximately 2000 fps before locking up.) No error messages appear in either
/var/log/XFree86.0.log or the system logs that offer clues to this
problem. This same behavior does not occur when using an ATI Radeon 9200
graphics card on the same system with the same drivers. Neither does it occur
under Windows 98 on the same hardware.

    Details of my system:

Dual Pentium III (500 MHz), running in SMP mode, on a Gigabyte GA-6BXD
motherboard (Intel 440BX chipset with AGP 1.0 (1x,2x) slot).

    kernel version 2.4.22
    glibc version 2.3.2
    gcc version 3.2.2
    XFree86 version 4.3.0

Things that I have tried include recompiling the kernel to disable SMP
support, disabling kernel-level DRI support, and testing fglrx versions
2.9.12, 2.9.13, 3.2.0, and 3.2.4. None of these fix the problem. I have
contacted ATI customer service via email but have not yet received
    anything helpful from them.

If anyone out there knows of anything that can remedy this problem, I
    would appreciate the help.

    Thanks
