Not that I knew a solution, but anyhow:
I had a similar Problem with my GeForce2 and 4 on several SuSE systems,
notably both with nv and nvidia (open/closed source) drivers: Upon
exiting X or switching from X to a Console I would sometimes get weird
color on the screen and the PC would freeze.
I had the impression that it was more likely to happen if I
Ctrl-Alt-Fx'ed from a GL game to a Console.
It went away with the following simultaneous 3 Changes, I didn't have
the motivation to figure out which one actually resolved it:
I switched to Debian (finally), Xfree86 is 4.3 (4.3.0-0ds4) just as with
my last SuSE; new 2.4.22 Kernel and new Nvidia 1.0-4496 drivers - now
the system is 100% stable.
What remains is an obsession to type 'sync' whenever I switch from or to
an X display.
YMMV
