    I don't know if this will help, but here goes.

    1. I have the same problem with glxinfo reporting direct rendering, even
    if it's loaded. However, it does report it working if glxinfo is run as
    root. I remember something about X running as root or as a user during a
    configuration a few releases back, unless I'm crazy, that could be an
    issue here.

    2. From what I recall of an old ATI card of mine, the TV out resolution
    must be at 640x480 or 800x600 (even under Windows), although that might
    be because of the card itself. Try lowering the resolution.
