I've got a debian sarge on quite powerful hardware (athlon XP 2200+,
geforce4 ti 128MB, etc etc), but since I've installed it, the Gnome 2.4
desktop has many astonishing symptoms: for instance, when I listen to mp3
with xmms, the CPU percentage of XFree86 process reaches 50-60%, and
obviously the mp3 playing skips and gets unbearable; when I use xMule,
the X server gets very slow, and I've got to kill X and restart it. I
guess it's a strange buffer conflict between Alsa Driver and nvidia
official driver: it seems incredible, but when I run 'xscreensaver',
xmms gets 'jammed' for few instants...
Below some useful info about my system:
hardware:
- athlon 2200+, ram 512MB;
- ge force 4 ti 4200;
- creative sound blaster live! 1024;
software:
- linux debian sarge;
- XFree86 4.2, gnome 2.4, nvidia last official driver;
- recompiled kernel 2.4.24;
- alsa driver 0.9 compiled with the following options: ./configure
--with-cards=emu10k1 --with-sequencer=yes;
I'm very exhausted and frustrated. I hope in your advice...
I beg your pardon about my incorrect English.
