desktop resolution

Hi,

I've got redhat 9, and gnome desktop, ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro 8Mb graphics
card.
I can't get resolution above 800*600 (even with 256bit colour), yet on
Windows (it's a dual boot machine), I can get 1600x1200 24bit colour!!
By my calculations, 1600x1200x24 takes up ~5Mb, so I should be alright
there.

I go to Display Settings and set resolution and colour depth there - it
allows me to select 1600x1200.

I get a message saying settings saved to /etc/X11/XF86Config, need to logout
and restart x server.

I logout and login in again - and I'm back to 800x600. I also tried
rebooted - same effect.

I'm sure I've previously had this working, but this is a new installation
I've just done

Anyone?

Many Thanks
Martin
