Looks like nearly everone posting here has gotten past 'startx' so
maybe I'll find some help here.

I have an otherwise retired laptop that I've tried to refit as a Linux
    machine.
The idea is that it's a free box and a free OS, and maybe I'll indulge
    my curiosity
on the cheap by trying Linux. At the moment, I see no business need
    for it. But I do
see possibilities worth pursuing if the frustration cost is not too
    high.

By now, I am on a second distribution and the fourth or fifth
    installation from scratch,
and have yet to launch X successfully.

Along with the cheap distros, I have some cheap books.
The most recent pickup is Red Hat Linux 6 Fast and Easy.
Not that I ever believed it was fast and easy, but it does help me
    frame the predicament.

On page 5, I see "type the command startx"

On page 337 I see the first mention of configuring Xwindows.

    To frame the predicament further:

    - This is a standalone machine, not networked.

    - This machine will probably never be in the same room with someone
    who has
      successfully installed Linux before.

    Sound like fun?

Anyway, I'm ready to either junk the machine or put NT on it, unless I
    can get
some interactive, nonjudgmental help. Hate to say it guys, but from
    the postings I've
already read, I don't have my hopes up.

However, I first acquired the distros in 1999 and I'm still at it, so
    I figure I ought to
give it another few months or so before giving up entirely.

To keep from making myself too crazy, I'm putting constraints on the
    help I'm willing to follow
    in getting to 'startx'

    - I'll post to this thread, and read what anyone's got to say.

    - I'll send along snippets of any file I can find, if requested.

    - I'll use any tool as long as it's:

    A) vi

    or

    B) There is no 'B'.

I realize I have not given you the specifics of my machine or distro.
    I have already
punched these into searches, and while not getting an empty result, I
    haven't gotten anything
useful from the sporadic postings on the subject.

Because I think I've already gotten hung up on the hardware, and I
    think this is essentially
a brainware problem, I'm going to withhold those particulars until the
    next posting.

    So who's in?
