Maybe you should consider using the tool xf86config (running it as root).
It comes very handy with older distros (also with new ones), and gives you
a basic setup of X (XF86Config) with lots of comments. MAny people use it
even these days, despite there is now a lot of other flashy and more
modern tools. You will not care, it's nice compared to vi...
