Video projector on Toshiba LapTop w/X

Hello.

I'm running RH9 on a Toshiba Sattelite laptop about 1.5 years old.
The machine and RH run fine and X is properly configured for the LCD
display.

Problem: Tried connecting a new Epson projector to the external video
port and get *interesting* results.

1. External port not active unless projector is connected before
   booting the laptop.

2. If laptop is booted with projector connected, LCD display is
   inactive. So, either the LCD or external port is active but not
   both at once.

3. Projector seems to work with plain text console until the display
   is full and scrolling should occur. At this point, there is no
   scrolling.

4. Starting X results in the projection image being trashed with
   blotches of blue and yellow color and no recognizable image.

This laptop is important to me right now so I'm reluctant to start
fiddling with the configuration until getting some advice how to
proceed.

I am thinking that X needs to be reconfigured while the projector is
connected so there can be a plain VGA config for one of the display
heads.

And what to do about getting the LCD and external port working
together? Also, fixing the X config will presumably not help the text
console scrolling issue.

Please assist.
