I have the 2.6.5 kernel up on two different machines (one uses a Radeon
card and the other a GeForce with the nVidia chipset). On both machines
attempts to use an optical mouse result in frequent 'rabid mouse'
syndrome: it goes crazy and bounces around opening windows and clicking
buttons at random until I manage to click on some neutral spot afterwhich
it stops.
There are lots of threads on this subject on the Gentoo forums, not much
elsewhere. I've tried all the suggestions I've found so far and not been
able to solve the problem. I have tried using "Device" /dev/psaux,
/dev/mouse, /dev/<something>/mice; I've tried "auto", "IMPS/2", "PS/2" and
"ExplorerPS/2" "Protocols", all with the "mouse" driver which worked fine
with these mice and the 2.4.25 kernel.
I have noticed that it is MUCH more apt to go beserk while there is some
heavy I/O going on - can't tell yet whether it is exclusively disk
activity, ethernet activity or both. But the mouse is reasonably stable
(like right now) when the system is quiet.
Does anyone have a clue how to solve this problem or how to go about
troubleshooting it? I'm running out of ideas.
Thanks
-Jeff
