Hi, thanks for the response.

I don't know how to view the XFree86.0.log file after running to run
level 5 because the display is so messed up I cannot do anything. Any
suggestions?

The only service that runs at run level 5 but not on 3 is xdm (same as
x?).

My graphics card is the NVidia XFX 5700 and the driver I have
installed is the one currently available on nvidia's website. I am
confident that it is installed correctly because if I run startx, kdm
or gdm from the run level 3 prompt, I get the NVidia splash screen and
the relevant desktop loads no bother.
