Don't know if it will help if something is determined to foul it up
but, you can set the DPI manually in XF86Config. It depends on your
physical screen size and resolution, I guess, but for me...

DisplaySize 325 243

...yields 80x80 DPI at 1024x768. It goes in the "Monitor" section.
