I'm still very new myself, and have no idea if this could actually
fix your "time-out" problem. The Error you mention below, where host
name isn't found relates to not having that hostname in the /etc/hosts
file. I had some occasional errors because of it, so hopefully it's
your fix. I can only bet it will remove the startx error message though,
not sure about your bigger problem.

My /etc/hosts file:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain xxxxxxxxxxx
#the xxx's are the actual hostname for my puter.

Don't ask me why Linux can know the puter hostname when it boots,
but still needs it in /etc/hosts. It just seems hostname is stored
in multiple locations. 'man hostname' can tell you more. If fact,
depending on distr, you could fix that error by adding that line
or some variation to one of multiple config files.

Alternatively, if I understood what I read, you could just *add*
a line.
