Why such an old X server? X 4.3.0 says it supports this video card with
    the siliconmotion module.

X 4.n has much better support for EDID than X 3.3.6 did, so in most
cases, Modelines are a thing of the past. X 4 also performed
significantly faster than X 3.3.6 on a Neomagic video card; YMMV.

I had to increase the Hsync and Vsync ranges in XF86Config to use any
mode other than 1600x1200 on my Thinkpad A22p's LCD. I'm using
       HorizSync 20-150
       VertRefresh 10-400
...which works fine for all "normal" video modes. The killer poke is
not possible with modern monitors; a hardwired cutoff circuit kicks in
if you try to drive a monitor over a preset H or Vsync limit. LCDs
don't even *have* sync in the way CRTs do, so I use wide sync settings
just to keep X from complaining.
