This question appears in news again and again... So I want to express my
opinion.
I hate both KDE and Gnome... But am currently using Gnome 2.6...
The reason why I don't like the is that they try to limit your freedom...
What is desktop environmet? It is:

The prefered window manager
The prefered widget library
Session manager
Prefered automatically started applications like panel and nautilus in
gnome...
Prefered set of GUI applications for basic needs... And for at least
Gnome2 prefered standard of HCI.
And for Gnome2 we have prefered charset (utf8)

So the problem is that KDE and Gnome don't let you customize any thing
in this list...
KDE have setup tools for Qt appearance/settings, Gnome have setup tools
for gtk2. the both have no setup tools for other widget libraries: gtk,
xt, motif...
Both environments have setup tools for Xft2/fontconfig but doesn't have
anything to do with old but steel working xfs engine and Xft.
They both doesn't let you easyly change window manager and
panel-application.
They both install lots of unnesessery software wich consumes too many
disk space... And I usually can't get read of it...
And Gnome2 is usually anoying because it wants me to use utf8 as system
charset. I think that one system must use only one charset, but not
nesesserely utf8...

For me freedesktop.org is really good initiative, but Gnome and KDE both
at the same time prevent it from achieving it's aim and give reasongs
for freedesktop to exist... For me desktop environment must be set of
flexible standards wich will help user to build his own unique
environment and wich will help programmers to write this components...

But Gnome and KDE now moves to the desktop for everyone and I consider
this way as the wrong one
