: This question appears in news again and again... So I want to express
: my opinion. I hate both KDE and Gnome... But am currently using
: Gnome 2.6... The reason why I don't like the is that they try to
: limit your freedom... What is desktop environmet? It is:
    : The prefered window manager
    : The prefered widget library
    : Session manager
: Prefered automatically started applications like panel and nautilus in
    : gnome...
: Prefered set of GUI applications for basic needs... And for at least
: Gnome2 prefered standard of HCI.
: And for Gnome2 we have prefered charset (utf8)
: So the problem is that KDE and Gnome don't let you customize any thing
    : in this list...

Worse, they conspire behind X's back, and thus end up having gratuitous
problems with multiple instances on a machine (has either one fixed this
issue yet?), and sometimes compromise heterogeneous interoperability.
I suppose that second point is just another aspect of "does't let
you customize", but it's a particularly nasty effect, and means you
sometimes have problems simply picking extra tools, let alone the basic
    set named above.

I've tried both KDE and Gnome. They caused me more hassle
than they provided convenience. But then... my usage patterns
are probably quite far from normal.
