Alt+[A-Z] key combinations are often intercepted by window managers or X
applications themselves. If you want to enter non-ASCII characters like
é ç £ ÿ, use the Multi_key. I've written about this several times in
this newsgroup, groups.google comp.os.linux.x keyword Multi_key .

The console is totally different from X; type Alt+NNN to get character
number NNN.
