I don't think there can be a clear winner. In my experience, KDE is more
fully featured, Gnome is 'lighter'. I use KDE when the horsepower is
there, otherwise, Gnome or XFCE. I do, however, use GTK for writing
software (it's less troublesome than assuming everyone in the world has
Motif installed - that's my preferred development environment).
