I consider periodic checks of file system usage, thereby preventing a
full file system, to be normal sysadmin function.

Rather than "suck it up and stop complaining" I recommend considering
it a "lesson learned the hard way" kind of thing, i.e. wisdom gained.

Any application should of course report file open() & write() errors,
tho many coders are just too lazy to do it.

But consider X - such errors reported to stdout/stderr may never be
seen if the switch to a graphical screen is incomplete. Depending on
the version of X you are using, maybe look around for its log file &
see if there are any hints there.
