full screen and virtual display

I use a virtual desktop:

                Modes "1024x768" ...
                Virtual 1600 1200

How can I ensure that a "full-screen" window takes up only the currently
visible part of the desktop. In my example above, I want a 1024x768
window, not a 1600x1200 window.
