Years ago I tried to list the things affecting your font experience on
Linux. I found the task too difficult. Let's try again! Can somebody
amend this list and add factual details like font type vocabulary,
software names, file names and configuration syntax:
- your monitor resolution
- whether subpixel rendering is available (on an LCD)
- the font files
- where the font files are located
- what kind of secondary cached, prepared derivative font databases or
font indexes have been generated
- whether thery are fixed resolution, multi-resolution
- ...hinted and/or scalable
- ...of various scalable formats
- Whether you are using X or something else (SDL games?)
- How your X config [Files] section specifies a font server or font
files
- How your X specifies your graphics card driver
- What graphics driver you use
- Which application you run (obviously)
- What application internal font settings you do
- What X toolkit your application uses
- If it is Qt, how are KDE font GUI settings configured
- If it is Qt, what is there in Qt wide config file font settings
(which are...?)
- same questions for Gnome/gtk (versions?)
And some more difficult things I don't understanf too well
+ fontconfig
+ Freetype
+ Debian defoma
+ antialiasing (the puzzle here is, that I don't really understand
which software/hardware/files affect antialising, all in all
