Hi All
I have been using my current linux setup for about 6 months I have not
updated any software in the last 1 month. A couple of days I noticed
that my Xsession was not responding, it was frozen. I managed to log
into the system using ssh and noticed that X was taking 94-99% of the
cpu (used top). I tried to kill the Xsession and any other application
that used the gui, I was able to kill the processes but my monitor still
showed the last frame where it froze. Thinking that there was some
process not releasing its memory I restarted the linux box and started
an Xsession with startx (using afterstep), everything looked ok the
session responed well. When I tried to open netscape the Xsession begain
to freeze. I had to follow the steps mentioned before to get it back.
Given that I had to switch to afterstep about a month prior , I ran the
normal gnome Xsession which froze even quicker that afterstep. Frankly I
am at a loss on how to begin to trouble shoot this. The box is about +4
years old so if a hardware component failed it would not surprise me.
Configuration:
XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Fedora Core 1: 4.3.0-42)
Linux solo 2.4.22-1.2188.nptlsmp #1 SMP Wed Apr 21 20:12:56 EDT 2004
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
RAM 386
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "r128"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "ATI Rage 128"
EndSection
Thanks for any help
Gil
