Mplayer and XV

This really stumps me, because I used to be able to play video files
using -vo xv in mplayer, but now I can't, after re-installing gentoo.

As far as I know, i've used the exact same settings as before, and even
have the same XF86Config file, but it won't work..

xvinfo gives:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present

and just for fun, when I tried to run the command as root, it gave me:
xvinfo: unable to open display

As a matter of fact, every program I use as root in XFree gives me that
output..

$DISPLAY as my normal user is ':0.0', while for root it is ''

Anyhow, this is my XF86Config file, same as it was before I
re-installed.
