I recently had to edit the main GNOME menu on our systems. Basically,
I had to remove some items and add an item. I took a long time to
search through the groups to find just what I needed. I thought I'd
post what I did in the event that it might help someone else out. Hope
    you find it useful!

    Modifying GNOME Menus

The following are steps I took to modify the main GNOME menu start
menu. I'm running GNOME2.0 under RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 on a
    Dell 2600 tower server.

As far as I can tell, by default, one is not supposed to make any
changes to the menus. Buried deep in the system, there's a little
file manipulation which needs to take place before one is allows to
customize the menus. So, here we go. (PS, these are notes directly
    found from a groups search).

    1. become root
    2. cd /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules
    3. cp default-modules.conf default-modules.conf-no-menu-editing
    4. cp default-modular.conf.with-menu-editing default-modules.conf

For any user want to have the right to edit their menu, you also need
    to this as the user:

    1. cd ~/.gnome2/vfolders
    2. cp /etc/X11/desktop-menus/applications.menu
    applications.vfolder-info

When gnome-panel is restarted (via logout/login) the user will be able
to see the changes they have made to their menu.

    Actually Making Menu Changes

I used "nautilus" to make changes to the menus. I would like to
point out, however, that I ran into some very buggy situations when
doing this. Of most note, was the gnome-panel consuming 49% of the cpu
when closing nautilus. If one does a "killall gnome-panel" that
    should clear things up.

    1. nautilus Applications:///
    2. When the nautilus window opens one can add folders and sub folders.

Setting Icons to the New Menu items

When I created a new menu item on the main gnome menu, I noticed it
wouldn't take the custom icon I was trying to assign it. The only
way I could get the icon to show was to go into the submenu to the main
item, right click, select properties and reselect the icon I wanted.

On a side note, it would be easiest if you put all of your custom icons
(if you're using some) into the /usr/share/pixmap directory. Doing
this, puts your icons into the default directory which opens for
    selecting icons.
