Maximum number of display monitors

I need to be able to control 20 independant monitors/displays. I don't
need to have video on each display, just have the ability to control
the color of the screen and the brightness of those colors. For space
and power considerations, I'm thinking of buying several used LCD
monitors 12" or greater.

Any ideas if X can handle that many displays?

What I'm trying to do is have a 5x4 array of displays which I can
synchronize colors/designs to the beat of music. (Think Saturday Night
Fever dance floor).

Any ideas appreciated.
