AFAIK, the "rotate" part of RANDR just doesn't work at all with any of
the ATi and nVidia video cards I've ever had access to. I think this is
because A) it's a complex thing to do B) doing rotation removes all the
hardware acceleration, making everything really slow C) hardly anyone
wants to do rotation.

I have an nVidia card and the 7676 build of the evil binary-only module.
Resizing works great; attempting to use "xrandr -o left" returns with a
BadMatch error. Same deal on my laptop with its Rage128 card and the
Free X module from Xorg.
