DPI on Debian (KDE on Knoppix & Xandros)

On all the RPM distros I've used, DPI can be set for various apps and
desktop in various ways, including:

1-In xorg.conf/XF86Config -> Section "Monitor" -> DisplaySize
#horizontal #vertical
2-startx -dpi #
3-In /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources and or /etc/X11/Xresources -> Xft.dpi: #
4-gnome-control-center
5-/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers -> :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi #

Under KDE, by using all or some combination of the above I've always
been able to get consistent font sizes for everything regardless of
toolkit (except GTK1).

On the two Debians I've ever used more than a few boots, Knoppix (3.x)
and Xandros (3), DPI seems hard coded to 75 regardless what screen
resolution or screen size is used. None of the above I've tried on
either produces any apparent impact, at least not as reported by
xdpyinfo or kinfocenter or
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/auth/dpi-screen-window.html .

The only small impact I found was on Xandros in /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers
changing from 75 to the desired DPI at ':0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X
-nolisten tcp vt7 -dpi". When I do that, xdpyinfo and kinfocenter report
my setting, but Firefox on
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/auth/dpi-screen-window.html still shows
(incorrectly, due to Gecko rounding error) 76. At 75 DPI, Xandros
Networks seems to use primarily about 10px/10pt, which is far too small
for me, but with the larger value in Xservers, the left and upper right
panes are improved, while the lower right stays much too small.

For Firefox on that page to show the chosen setting, the only way I've
found so far that works is via gnome-control-center, and that isn't in
the menu system, so no novice is likely ever to figure out on his own
how to fix DPI for GTK2 apps. Further, in the RPM distros, Firefox
doesn't need a gnome-control-center setting anywhere in ~/.gconf/* .
Firefox 1.5 is perfectly happy to use whatever value has been set via 1,
2 or 3 above for both its UI and web pages that use pt for font sizing.

I tried looking into using setxconf, but so far the docs seem limited to
--help, which makes no apparent mention of DPI.

Because Knoppix and Xandros start X in only runlevel 2, I've not been
able to figure out how to start X in either using startx to test if the
-dpi parameter works there.

How in Debian is DPI in xft/fontconfig controlled? Neither have an
Xresources regular file, only a directory.

Why do these Debians ignore DisplaySize?

I tried quite a bit of Googling for discussion of DPI on Debian, but
have had no real success with it. By default, both Knoppix and Xandros
make virtually everything too small for high resolution displays. Can
anyone help here?
