Why not do the more proper and easy way, let a plguing in the browser open
links to streams open totem.

You could look for which window managers are running on the system and from
there look who owns the process.
I think you may benefit more from using apps like freevo, mythtv and you find
more apps of the same kind at freshmeat.net
