Hi,
Whenever I logout from a window manager (tried both XFCE and IceWM), my pc hangs, only showing a blank screen. The only thing I can do is press the reset button. I can login from another pc using ssh, but the ssh session is killed at the same time I logout at the first machine.
/var/log/messages shows nothing suspicious:
Jan 17 15:20:47 localhost gdm(pam_unix)[2601]: session closed for user berend === Pressed reset here! Jan 17 15:23:22 localhost syslogd 1.4.1: restart. Hmmm......... ever hear of updates???? The current FC3 kernel is for example;
kernel-2.6.12-1.1380_FC3.i686.rpm 20-Oct-2005 09:45 18M
more on this later..........
/var/log/gdm/:0.log contains:
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6 _XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/localhost.localdomain:0 _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6
Disable inet6, as root modify your /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ ifcfg-XXXX file(s) by adding a line like;
IPV6INIT=no
And in your /etc/modprobe.conf add a line;
alias net-pf-10 off
Maybe this is where things go wrong, but I'm not sure.
My configuration is: - Fedora Core 3 - gdm 2.6.0.5-6 - XFCE 4.2.3-1 - IceWM 1.2.23
Please let me know if I need to provide more information.
It's later.......
You might want to install and use yum and update your system, lots has changed (you saw how old your kernel is). The latest change is FC3 is now (as of 1-16-2006) in legacy mode; http://www.fedoralegacy.org/
The webpage has not been updated (yet), but FC3 is there;
http://download.fedoralegacy.org/fedora/3/updates/
Using yum;
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/yum/index.html http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc3/#installsoftware
Hello Lenard,
Thanks for your reply. I managed to disable inet6 and got rid of the
error messages in the gdm logfile. However the original problem remained. Then I upgraded packages kernel and xorg, and now it works!
Thanks again, Berend .
