ive got fedora3....i downloaded the xfree86 tarballs and installed them
because i wanted to run rdesktop1.4.1....during running the installer
script it asked for permission to overwrite certain files...i gave the
permission...but after rebooting...and after logging in..i get only an
xterm and a small window called xsm...there is no gui..the keyboard is
also not function properly..like the ALT+TAB key.and the scroll
mouse...i can only start gui application fro the CLI...no start
menu....
i read somewhere i have to install a new window manager so ive
downloaded xfce4

Better you upgrade to Fedora Core 4, you got most of your systems default settings reset to the defaults that xfree86 has and things may be different in xfree86 than it's in xorg which FC4 uses, so you may get in other troubles later on. ... Maybe it is a too gross permission, but I wouldn't grant any of it's ... shipped with Windows XP without being updated later by a custom installer.... (comp.security.firewalls)
