I am _presuming_ that glxgears being much slower indicates something
wrong.
I am using Slackware 10.2 newly installed after formatting everything
except /home which is on a separate partition. There are no hardware
changes.
Running glxgears on the new machine using my very old xorg.conf (used
to be xf86config) glxgears give 8 times the speed (1600 fps)
as on a new xorg.conf (196 fps) created with xorgconfig and I cannot
understand why.
The monitor, graphics card, computer motherboard are exactly the same.
The settings in the two xorg.conf files seem to be the same. I
printed them out and compared the settings for Input Device - Mouse,
Input Device - Keyboard, Monitor Section and Graphics Device Section
and they appear to have the same information. For example, HorizSync,
VertRefresh, Graphics Driver "ati" and other settings that could make
a difference. I've also switched the DefaultDepth around from 24 to
16 and back.
You don't mention comparing the Module section. Make sure those
agree; it's been long enough since I've set up xorg on my machines
that I don't remember which are the important settings to have opengl
working. But make sure you've got the same set of modules in both.
isn't the first thing to check the output of
$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
... or have things changed that much since last I was sober.,.?
