Maybe someone has managed to delete the black entry in the rgb.txt, then add it manually, you can check this easily with: grep black /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt
Another possibility is that your X is configured to look for the file in another place, see to that you have
RgbPath "/usr/share/X11/rgb"

I tried many
export RgbPath="/usr/share/X11/rgb"
export RGBPATH="/usr/share/X11"
etc. etc.
and always got
dkraft@newton/home/dkraft> export RgbPath="/usr/share/X11"
dkraft@newton/home/dkraft> /usr/local/maple/bin/maple -cw
Warning: Color name "gray" is not defined
Warning: Color name "black" is not defined
Warning: Color name "LightSeaGreen" is not defined
Warning: Color name "lightgray" is not defined
all colors are defined in rgb.txt
