Have you got it working on the net ? If so go visit the kubuntu and
ubuntu homepages for a start lots of useful advice there. When you say
launch it from a shell, do you mean a tty or do you mean from the runbox
within kde or from a terminal within kde. I have never seen any linux not
give you at least an error code if you try to run something the way you
said. If you are running it from a tty then of course it isn't going to
work it needs x running. How did you set up a root password, did you do an
expert install in that case you should know a lot more about what you are
doing than your post seems to indicate.
Have you tried running the control centre from the kde menu ? There is
an administration box in anything that needs sudo/root access. You really
give nothing to work on and no real indication of what you are trying to
achieve.
