Dual-monitor setup problems (and nVidia driver installation troubles)



Hello everyone,

I will greatly appreciate if you could help me with this problem. I
recently bought a nice new 22" monitor (ViewSonic VX2235wm) to be used
with my HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop. I want to use it instead of the
build-in screen (at least when I'm at home). So I don't even want the
laptop monitor to go into graphical mode. It seems pretty simple.
However, so far I wasn't able to get the new monitor to work on linux
in any shape or form.

My graphic card is nVidia GeForce4 420 Go 32M and I'm using standard
"nv" driver which comes with Fedora 6 (I wasn't able to install nvidia
driver, see bellow).

I though that may be installing nvidia driver from nVidia web-site
would help. I first tried to install 1.0-9746 version of their driver.
However, I got an error saying that my card is not supported by this
version and that I should use "legacy" drivers. Then I tried to install
version 1.0-7184. I got an error saying that it can't build kernel
module:
