I find it highly unlikely that startx is installed - startx is
available in /usr/bin. What is your path? startx is provided in
xbase-clients. Does

dpkg -l | grep xbase-clients

give you a hit?

Sounds to me like you have partial or incomplete X installation.

Sounds like it is misconfigured (or more likely, not configured). You
can reconfigure the X server (as root):

dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86

I don't recall which driver the SS5 uses, but I have installed Debian
on a SS4 without any hitches. I suspect they use the same driver.
