ATI fglx driver doesn't work with modelines

I'm using openSuse 10.2 (DVD).
I downloaded and installed the newest ATI proprietary driver from the ATI website, following the instructions to the point (including running sax2 with the right arguments after the installation and taking care of not running aticonfig).
The system works fine, but I need a custom resolution for my monitor (1200x900). However, when I insert *any* kind of modeline in xorg.conf, my graphics card (ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MB) "crashes". The display goes black. Even if I blindly switch to a console (CTRL+Alt+F1, for example), the display is still blank. I can login and type "reboot" and it works, but nothing is displayed. The monitor reports 640x480 even though the framebuffer console is set-up to use 1280x1024.
Note that the problem occurs regardless of whether I actually use that modeline or not. Actually, there have to be no modelines at all in xorg.conf for the driver to work. As soon as a modeline is present in there, the card goes blank.
The default open source Radeon driver that comes with openSuse 10.2 doesn't have that problem. But I don't want to use it cause it's too slow in 2D and doesn't seem to support 3D at all.
I'm totally clueless. What is going on and how can I fix it?
