How do I enable 3d acceleration on my ATI Radeon 9000 card?

I am using Debian Sarge, and xserver-xfree86 with an ATI Radeon 9000 AGP card.
On the same machine, I have previously had 3d acceleration working, using open
source 3d drivers.
I have since reinstalled the system, Debian Sarge, and xserver-xfree86, and my
3d graphics is not working.
glxinfo|grep render
This reveals:
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
I suspect that some game I had installed on the previous test system
(Maybe Tux Racer), installed some OpenGL component, and made the direct
rendering operate.
On installation of the XFree86, the card is detected as an ATI card. I change
to the Radeon driver, by editing the configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
as follows:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Radeon 9000"
Driver "radeon"
EndSection
By default Driver section reads "ati". All I did was change this to read
"Radeon", and the 3d graphics worked on the test system.
On my current live system, I just installed the packages that I wanted, and 3d
acceleration is not active. (Some of the packages have updated since I ran the
test system, I use the netinstall version).
I suspect I have to install an OpenGL or something.
Please advise.
Mark.
