Opto-22 used to have a good line of converters and repeaters
that worked quite well. Some of them had to be configured to
match the baud rate and serial settings so that they knew when
to turn off the drivers.
The repeaters were particularly handy, since they could be used
to convert from a 4-wire interface to a 2-wire interface.
