Hello everyone --
I am new to linux and am planning to install linux on a new 80gb HD.
This is my partition plan:
3gb - Windows 98 OS partiton
5gb - Windows executable partition
10gb - Linux partitions (including swap file)
- How should I best split this up?
- 3gb to root, 6gb to users (probably only 1, myself) and 1gb to
swap?
20gb - Backup of Archos MP3 jukebox
30gb - MP3 partition (yes, all mine. I converted all my CDs)
12gb - shared data partition
I do have a few questions.
I have the distro CDs for Redhat v8, but I keep hearing good things
about Debian. Does anyone have a concrete opinion on these two
distributions or another?
I know root needs to be in a partition near the boot sector. What is a
good utility / plan for splitting up the HD? The actual HD is a Maxtor
6L080J4. My plan is to install Win98 (I need it for work and school
and as a crutch while learing the new OS and applications).
Can I partition the Disk using some DOS / Windows utility but not
format that 10gb chunk then later install Linux on that portion?
That's it for now. Any suggested readings are appreciated! I am
trolling some of the comp.linux.os.* groups.
Thanks in advance -- and by the way the "bad hacker" moniker refers to
nethack, not hacking per se.
