Unfortunately (in the case of VIZ) Autodesk/discreet is more or less in
bed with Microsoft ... It is typically very difficult, if not impossible
to run their software under wine ... I have heard of limited success,
but have so far not been able to accomplish any of these myself ... You
should check wine's website for other's success stories ..
http://www.winehq.org ... As for Photoshop, just use the Gimp :) I
believe there are some similar packages available to replace Illustrator
as well ... For VIZ, I know that MAYA, SoftImage, and Houdini are all
available and work very well under Linux. It is quite unfortunate that
some otherwise very good software companies do not consider Linux as a
practical OS .. Luckily, there are many who do, and industry is begining
to come around too :) Personally, I don't support companies who only
code for M$ ... And, not to be critical, but if you can swing the price
tag on VIZ, how can you really say XP is too pricey? I mean, I'd never
buy it, but it only adds about $100 to the cost of a new system. Of
course, Linux is FREE, much more stable, and I am very happy with it on
my Dual Xeon 2.4GHz (with HT :) ...
