Are the 50x and the TDK both set to "Master" or both set to "Slave"?
Or are they set to "Cable Select" without a suitable cable?

Using it and your computer recognising it are two different things.
Check your boot log and/or 'dmesg' to see if it recognises the drives.

I've been using Athlon/Duron CPUs on ASUS mobos for years, and it runs
really well. Currently I'm using an Athlon XP 2000+ on a ASUS A7V8x
mobo.

A friend of mine also had trouble with his nVidia board. I never had
any trouble with my Asus. If you buy it, remember to install the
latest BIOS on it, since it'll allow you to boot from USB devices.
